This is turning into a busy summer with festivals and concerts, not to mention trying to finish up that pesky album. It’s coming, but I needed to put the brakes on—things were moving too fast and I had to get more of me into mix, even if that means going back in the studio and redoing work that I did when I didn’t really have my voice back. But enough of that. You can look forward to hearing us live at the following venues, whether we have a new album in hand or not:
July 4 House of Musical Traditions Grand Re-Opening and Annual Fourth of July Bash Westmoreland Ave, Takoma Park (essentially around the corner and within spitting distance of the old House of Musical Traditions location) We’ll be playing a set sometime after the parade; I’m guessing around noon. A lot of other folks will be performing, though the only ones I know for sure are that dynamic duo of Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer.
July 5 Point Lookout Lighthouse Open House 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Point Lookout State Park, Scotland, MD
Calico Jack will be on hand, performing for folks that come to visit the lighthouse, probably one of the spookiest places on the Bay. Make the trip past St. Mary’s City to the mouth of the Potomac River and visit the state park that once held Civil War POWs before popping in at the lighthouse itself. There are more ghost stories associated with this place than any other single edifice I’ve found on the Bay. The song Point Lookout, on the Oyster Wife album, touches on only a few of them. It’s open to the public one day a month. Now’s your chance!
July 22 Plein Air dinner, Easton, MD 6-8 p.m. I’m thinking this is probably a private event for folks who are participating in Easton’s Plein Air competition. For more information about that, go to www.pleinair-easton.com.
July 28 Havre de Grace Maritime Museum TBA (evening concert)
July 29 Jim Richardson Maritime Museum, Cambridge, MD. TBA (evening concert)
July 30 Annapolis Maritime Museum, 7-8:30 p.m. Foot of Second Street (Back Creek side) in Eastport These concerts are a splendid picnic opportunity. Desserts, wine and beer are available for purchase, the gorgeous backdrop is free (as is the concert).
July 31 Annapolis City Dock noon-1 p.m. There’s plenty of parking along the city dock this time of day (bring lots of quarters), and places nearby that are happy to sell you a sandwich to go if you forget to bring a lunch from home.
July 31 Schooner Woodwind Sunset Cruise 6:30-8:30 p.m. with BRAD HOWARD!!!! The Schooner Woodwind leaves from the Marriott dock in downtown Annapolis. There is parking at the hotel, but we recommend using the parking garage on Main Street and walking down to the boat (cheaper). These cruises are superb. There’s always wind, and the boat often gets as far as the Chesapeake Bay bridge before heading back. We play a lot of requests on these Bay sails; it’s all very informal. The Woodwind folks serve really great beer (Clipper City) and there’s time (and light) left for dinner when you get back (we recommend the food right there at the Marriot; dockside dining at its best). Tickets are $37 for adults; you can purchase them on line or right at the dock, but these cruises often sell out so getting your tickets ahead of time isn’t a bad thing (www.schoonerwoodwind.com).
August 2-3 Havre de Grace Mari-Fest This is a two-day event with music sprinkled liberally throughout. Judy Cook will be there, along with Don Shappelle and Bob Zentz (I think).
Stay tuned for the fall calendar, which I’m building daily. So many venues, so little time!!
Cheers,
Janie
